You may not need to replace it. Makn Energy can assess your existing system and determine whether adding battery storage, expanding your solar or upgrading the complete system provides better value.
How Much Can Solar & Battery Save?
Your savings depend on your electricity consumption, when you use electricity, solar system size, battery capacity, electricity tariff and feed-in tariff.
The biggest savings generally come from using your own solar energy instead of purchasing electricity from the grid. A battery can increase the amount of solar energy your household uses by storing excess generation for later.
Send us a recent electricity bill and we'll recommend a solar or solar + battery system based on your actual energy usage.

Solar & Battery Rebates in Adelaide
Eligible Adelaide homeowners may be able to reduce the upfront cost of both solar panels and home battery storage through Australian Government incentives.
Federal Solar STC Incentive
Eligible residential solar systems can receive Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), which reduce the upfront cost of installing solar.
At Makn Energy, the applicable STC value can be applied directly to your solar quote, so you don't normally need to claim the incentive separately.
The amount depends on factors including the system size, installation date, location and current STC value.
Cheaper Home Batteries Program
Eligible home batteries connected to new or existing solar may receive an upfront discount through the Australian Government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program.
The government describes the program as providing a discount of around 30% for a range of eligible battery systems, although the actual discount depends on battery usable capacity, installation date and STC value.
Eligible battery systems can range from 5kWh to 100kWh nominal capacity, with STC support applying to the first 50kWh of usable battery capacity.
Solar + Battery Can Receive Both Incentives
When eligible solar and battery storage are installed together, the solar system may qualify for solar STCs while the battery may separately qualify for battery STCs under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program.
Makn Energy Can Handle the Rebate Process
We can calculate the applicable STC incentives and show them clearly in your solar or battery proposal, subject to eligibility.
Government incentives, STC values and eligibility requirements can change. Actual discounts depend on the system, installation date and applicable program requirements.

How Much Can Solar Save You in Adelaide?
Solar savings depend on the size of your system, how much electricity your home uses, when you use it, your electricity tariff and how much solar energy you use directly in the home.
The biggest savings usually come from using your solar instead of buying electricity from the grid.
During the day, your solar system supplies the home first. This can reduce the amount of expensive grid electricity you need to purchase. Any excess solar can then be exported to the grid or stored in a home battery for use later.
Use More Solar During the Day
Running appliances such as air conditioning, washing machines, dishwashers, pool pumps and electric hot water while solar is generating can increase solar self-consumption.
Store Excess Solar in a Battery
A battery can store excess daytime solar for use during the evening, overnight or during expensive electricity tariff periods.
Size the System Properly
A larger system isn't automatically the best investment. We consider your electricity consumption, available roof space, tariff, future battery storage and EV charging before recommending a system size.
What Affects Your Solar Savings?
Actual savings vary between households and depend on individual usage patterns, tariffs and system design.
Want a More Accurate Savings Estimate?
Send Makn Energy a recent electricity bill and we'll assess your usage and recommend an appropriately sized solar system.
Your Complete Guide to Solar Panels in Adelaide
Going solar is one of the best investments a South Australian homeowner can make. With some of the highest solar irradiance in the world and generous government incentives, SA households can dramatically reduce their electricity bills and carbon footprint. This guide walks you through everything — from how the technology works to what size system you need and how quickly it pays for itself.
How a Home Solar System Works – Panels, Inverters & Batteries
A home solar system has three core components working together to generate, convert, and store clean energy.
22–25% efficiency
Modern monocrystalline panels
Solar Panels
Solar panels convert sunlight into DC electricity, which the inverter converts into usable AC power for your home or business.
Most modern panels use high-efficiency N-type monocrystalline technology, delivering approximately 22–25% efficiency. When comparing panels, consider their power output, efficiency, heat performance, degradation rate and warranty. Quality panels now commonly include a 25-year product warranty and a 30-year performance warranty, depending on the model.
We recommend proven brands such as AIKO, Jinko Solar Tiger Neo and Trina Solar for their efficiency, reliability and long-term performance. Current premium models can achieve efficiencies approaching 25%.
97–99%
Typical inverter efficiency
Inverters
The inverter is the heart of your solar system. It converts the DC electricity generated by your panels into AC electricity your home or business can use. The three main options are:
- String inverters: One central inverter—reliable, cost-effective and ideal for straightforward, unshaded roofs.
- Microinverters: Installed beneath each panel, allowing panels to operate independently—ideal for shaded or complex roof layouts.
- Hybrid inverters: Manage both solar panels and compatible battery storage—an excellent choice if installing a battery now or preparing for one later.
When comparing inverters, consider efficiency, monitoring, warranty, battery compatibility, backup capability and local technical support. We recommend trusted brands including SigEnergy, GoodWe, Fronius, FoxESS and Enphase.
80–90%
Self-consumption with battery
Battery Storage
A solar battery stores excess solar energy for use at night, during peak electricity periods or when solar production is low. This helps increase solar self-consumption, reduce reliance on the grid and lower electricity bills.
Modern home batteries generally use safe, long-lasting lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology. When comparing batteries, consider usable capacity, power output, expandability, warranty, inverter compatibility, monitoring and blackout protection. Most quality batteries offer a 10-year warranty.
Backup power is not automatically included with every battery and may require a compatible hybrid inverter, gateway or additional switching equipment.
We highly recommend Sigenergy SigenStor for its premium all-in-one design, intelligent energy management, modular battery capacity and advanced backup options. We also install trusted systems from GoodWe, Tesla and FoxESS.
25+ years
Typical racking lifespan
Solar Racking & Mounting
Solar racking is the structural system that secures your panels to the roof. A quality mounting system must withstand Australian wind and weather conditions for the full life of your solar system — typically 25+ years.
Most residential installations use roof-mounted aluminium rail systems fixed to the rafters with stainless steel hardware. Tilt frames can be added on flat roofs to optimise panel angle for maximum solar yield.
We use only the best quality racking systems with 25 year warranties.
Real-time
Performance visibility
Monitoring Systems
A solar monitoring system lets you track your system's performance in real time — including solar generation, home consumption, battery state of charge, grid import and export, and individual panel output (with compatible inverters).
Most modern inverters include built-in Wi-Fi monitoring accessible via a smartphone app. Platforms such as SigenEnergy's SigenStor app, GoodWe SEMS, Fronius Solar.web and Enphase Enlighten provide detailed dashboards, fault alerts and historical data.
Monitoring is valuable for detecting underperformance early, verifying your system is operating as expected, and maximising self-consumption. Some platforms also allow remote firmware updates and inverter configuration, reducing the need for on-site service visits.
What Size Solar System Do I Need for My Adelaide Home?
System size depends on your electricity consumption, roof space, and goals. Here's a practical guide:

These are indicative figures based on SA conditions and current feed-in tariffs. Your Makn Energy consultant will size your system precisely based on your actual bills and roof orientation.
Solar Rebates & Government Incentives Available in SA
South Australia has some of Australia's best solar incentives. Here's what's available right now:
Federal STC Rebate
Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) provide a federal incentive that reduces the upfront cost of an eligible solar installation. In Adelaide, a typical 6.6 kW solar system installed in 2026 receives approximately 45 STCs, providing an estimated discount of around $1,700 The discount is normally applied directly to your quotation, so there is no separate rebate application or waiting for reimbursement. We manage the eligibility requirements and paperwork as part of the installation. The solar STC entitlement reduces each year until the scheme ends in 2030, so installing sooner generally provides a larger upfront discount. The final amount depends on the installation date, postcode, panel capacity and current STC value
SA Home Battery Scheme
The Federal Government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program changed on 1 May 2026, affecting how much rebate homeowners receive for larger battery systems. The rebate is still available, but it now favours batteries sized for household consumption rather than very large systems. The program provides an upfront discount on eligible battery installations through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES). The rebate is generally applied by your installer at the time of purchase. Eligible systems can still receive approximately 25–30% off the upfront battery cost, depending on battery size and the current STC value.
Feed-In Tariff (FiT)
When your solar system generates more power than you use, the excess is exported to the grid and you receive a feed-in tariff credit on your bill. SA feed-in tariffs currently range from 2–25 cents/kWh depending on your retailer. While lower than peak rates, maximising self-consumption (using power as it's generated, or storing it in a battery) or exporting at peak times is a great way to reduce the payback period on a battery.
Interest-Free & Green Loans
Many SA households access solar through green loans or interest-free finance, making it possible to go solar with $0 upfront. Repayments are typically offset by bill savings from day one, meaning the system pays for itself as you go. Makn Energy offers flexible finance options — ask us for details.
Solar Payback Period & Return on Investment in Adelaide
Solar is one of the best-returning investments available to homeowners. Here's what the numbers look like in SA:
3–5 years
Typical payback period
For a 6.6–10kW system in SA
15–25%
Annual return on investment
Based on bill savings + FiT credits
25+ years
Panel lifespan
With 80%+ output guaranteed at 25 years
$40,000+
Lifetime savings
Over 25 years for a typical SA home
Payback periods have shortened dramatically as panel prices have fallen and electricity prices have risen. A 10kW system installed today in SA typically pays for itself in 3–5 years, then generates free electricity for 20+ more years. Adding a battery extends payback slightly (typically 6–8 years for the battery component) but significantly increases energy independence and protection against rising tariffs.
How Long Do Solar Panels Last? Lifespan & Maintenance in SA
| Component | Expected Lifespan | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Solar Panels | 25–30 years | Degrade ~0.5% per year. Most quality panels carry a 25-year performance warranty guaranteeing 80%+ output. |
| String Inverter | 10–15 years | The most likely component to need replacement. Budget for one inverter replacement over the system's life. |
| Microinverters | 20–25 years | Longer lifespan than string inverters. Enphase offers a 25-year warranty. |
| Battery Storage | 10–15 years | LFP batteries rated for 6,000–10,000 cycles. Capacity degrades gradually over time. |
| Wiring & Mounting | 25+ years | Quality stainless steel mounting hardware and UV-rated cabling lasts the life of the system. |
Solar systems require minimal maintenance. An annual inspection and panel clean (especially in dusty SA conditions) keeps output at its peak. Makn Energy offers ongoing maintenance plans to keep your system performing optimally.
Upgrading or Adding Battery Storage to an Existing Solar System
Already have solar? You may be leaving significant savings on the table. Here's what upgrading can do for you:
Add Battery Storage
The most popular upgrade. If your existing system is exporting excess power to the grid at low feed-in rates, adding a battery captures that energy for use at night. We can replace most existing grid inverters with hybrid as long as your solar is up to standard or we can pair it with an AC-coupled battery like the Tesla Powerwall.
Expand Your Panel Array
If your energy usage has grown (new EV, pool, home office), adding more panels to your existing system can be straightforward. We assess your current inverter capacity and roof space to design the optimal expansion.
Replace an Ageing Solar System
Older solar systems—especially those installed before 2018—often use lower-efficiency panels and inverters nearing the end of their 10–15-year lifespan. Replacing the complete system is usually more cost-effective than upgrading individual components. A modern system provides greater solar capacity, improved performance and technology designed to deliver reliable energy savings for the next 25 years.
Add Smart Monitoring
Modern monitoring systems give you real-time visibility of your generation, consumption, and export. Advanced Apps like MySigen from SigEnergy are AI-driven which enables your system to be the most efficient it can be, track performance and spot issues early.
What's the Best Solar System for an Adelaide Home?
There's no single 'best' system — the right choice depends on your roof orientation, shading, daily usage patterns, budget, and future plans (EV, pool, home office). That said, here's what we recommend for most SA homes:
